Chester Gibs: Art and Scent Fusion

About Chester Gibs

My name is Chester Gibs, born in The Netherlands in 1969, and my passion for travel and art has been a lifelong journey. Graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam in 2002, with a focus on Painting and Drawing, only deepened my love for artistic expression.

Drawing is my true passion. The simple yet profound act of selecting paper, pencils, ink, or pens is an essential and delightful part of my creative process. I find inspiration in artists like Hokusai, H.R. Giger, and Klimt, whose works continue to feed my imagination.

Merging the Visible and Ivisible

Through this platform, I share a world of my drawings, infused with my deep love for both art and the intangible, aromatic universe of fragrance. Scent plays a vital role in my creative journey—I immerse myself in its essence before setting pen to paper. Around 2018, I took my fascination with scent a step further, seriously exploring perfume creation in my tiny home laboratory in Amsterdam. Some of my favorite notes in perfumery are frankincense, clove, and tuberose. I love white flowers!

I’ve come to realize that while visual and olfactory art are vastly different fields, my approach to both is deeply intuitive. However, fragrance-making challenges the chaotic artist in me to work with precision. Meeting incredible perfumers and working in a haute parfumerie in Amsterdam has only fuelled my passion to create something truly special.

Creating from mixed heritage

I am of mixed heritage—my mother was born in Bandung, Indonesia, and my father in Zaandijk, the Netherlands. Naturally, the rich scents and flavors of Indonesian cuisine, such as clove, cinnamon, and lemongrass, have always captivated me.

My goal is to craft perfumes that bring me joy and comfort—scents I personally love to wear. I’d like to build an olfactive bridge between what we see and what we feel. Ultimately, I strive to translate the essence of my artwork into fragrances, with the dream of launching my own perfume brand in the near future.

Fragrant greetings,

Chester Gibs
